As the temperature soars this summer keeping your dog cool and out of danger should take priority. There are several things you need to do to ensure that your pup does not become overheated during the hot summer months. Heat can be a true danger for any pet but especially so for your dog.
Imagine being stuck in the heat strapped into a fur coat that you just cannot take off and that is what it is like for your dog. Taking a few simple steps can help your pooch stay cool and safe during the heat. First, we are going to go over the things you should not do.
The List of Things NOT to Do
There are a few things that you should NOT do when the temperature rises:
- Never leave your pooch in the car
- Never leave them outdoors without fresh water
- Walk or run them until they are panting heavily
Never leave your dog in the car even for 10 minutes. If it is hot out it can be 20-30 higher in the car, even with the windows open. Your fur baby can quickly overheat, have a heat stroke and die. Never leave them outdoors without fresh water available. Exercise during times that the heat is not so high, like early morning hours or late evening hours.
Take frequent breaks when walking in the shade so your dog can cool down. Dogs do not have sweat glands, they pant to cool down. They dehydrate faster than humans do, so you must take that into consideration when you are outdoors exercising.
What You Can Do!
There are ways that you can ensure that your fur baby stays cool this summer:
- Keep them indoors when the heat is too high
- Make sure they have a shady spot to lay down in when they are outdoors
- Keep fresh water nearby always
Helping your bestie stay cool during the summer is easy enough if you follow the tips above. You should also consider getting your pooch a pool! A pool will give your pup an easy way to cool down and of course add some fun to the day!
We took a look at some pools and reviewed them to make it easier for you to choose a pool that is perfect for your pooch.
We wanted to bring enough options for everyone so we decided on a short list of criteria to narrow down the options and ensure that there was something for everyone:
- Highly rated
- Built for different sized breeds
- Space considerations
- Price point
We choose the dog pools to review that everyone agreed was a good pool. We also looked at pools that were built for different sized breeds. You do not want to use a pool built for a large breed for a small breed dog, it could be dangerous and overwhelming for the dog.
Of course, you also need to know about the space you need for the pool and for storage when it is not in use. We looked at pools at different price points to try to find affordable options for everyone.
Finally, we looked for the best value for the money. The benefits of having a pool for your dog to enjoy during the summer are clear. They can stay out of the heat while outside. They can get some exercise in and it is a great deal of fun! Here are some of the options that we found and our review:
Cool Pup Splash About Dog Pool, Blue
The Cool Pup Splash About Dog Pool was chosen to be on our list of best options for a couple of reasons:
- Its great for large breeds
- It is made of tough PVC plastic that can support rough play
- It folds down for easy storage
- It is durable
- Easy to fill and empty
We liked this pool for larger breed dogs because of its durable construction. It is also great for anyone that is concerned about storage because it folds slat and is easy to stow away. On the down side of things this is not a good option for small breeds.
Frontpet Foldable Dog Pet Pool Bathing Tub
The Frontpet Foldable Dog Pet Pool Bathing Tub is an excellent option for smaller outdoor spaces and a great option for medium sized dogs. What we liked:
- Very easy to store
- Nice compact size
- Ideal for medium sized dogs
- Very easy to fill and drain
This is a great option for a small yard and a medium sized dog. It would also be a good option for a larger breed that is more interested in splashing around then swimming around. It is easy to jump in and out of and can be folded flat for storage or transportation.
One Dog One Bone Dog Pool (Bone Shaped)
The One Dog One Bone Dog Pool is made of tough rubber truck bed liner material so it can easily stand up to the roughest of play. We loved this pool because:
- Its unique and fun to have in the yard
- It is very durable and great for tough breeds
- It is perfect for large and medium sized dogs
This pool is adorable and clearly made for your furry friend. The bone shape really sets this pool apart from other options. There is no disguising who this pool is meant for.
On the down side this is not exactly easy to move if you need something you can transport to play dates. It is also not very easy to store because it is a solid shape that does not fold and lay flat.
Of course if you want to consider this a permanent part of the yard than this would be a perfect pick. It is UV resistant and chew resistant.
It will stand up to all types of weather so leaving it outdoors during the winter (as long as you drain it) would be fine! This company also offers, paw shaped pools as well.
They are constructed from the same tough materials, and offer the same amount of fun. They are available in both large sizes and small sizes so you have a great selection to choose from.
Outdoor Swimming Pool Bathing Tub – Portable Foldable – Ideal for Pets
This Portable Foldable pool is a great option for smaller breeds. The smaller depth makes it easy for little guys to get in and out without much struggle. We liked it because:
- It is completely foldable and portable for easy storage and travel
- It has an easy to use drain and is easy to fill
- It is sturdy enough for smaller breeds
This is a great affordable option for small breeds. The price point is perfect and it is well made! If you have a smaller space for storage this would be perfect.
It easily setups and then folds flat for storage. It would be perfect for a yard, balcony or patio. Its compact size makes it a great on the road option as well!
One of the biggest pulls for this pool is the fact that the price is so low. It is a great value because the pool is well-made but it is very inexpensive!
Foldable Pet Dog Shower Bathing Bathtub Wash Swimming Tub Pool
This foldable pet pool/bathing option is perfect for small spaces and small to medium sized dogs. It folds completely flat for easy storage and transportation. The sides and bottom are constructed from heavy gauge PVC so it resists damage from claws. We liked it because:
- It is roomy enough for small to medium sized dogs but does not take up a huge footprint in the yard
- The material is heavy duty and durable so it will last for seasons to come
- The side walls are firm and do not collapse under the weight of the dog getting in and out if they should lean on the sides
- It is easy to drain and fold when the time comes to store it for the winter
Overall this is a high-quality pool for pets at a great low price. It looks great when it is set up and the pup will enjoy hours and hours of fun play time. It can easily be setup just about anywhere because it does not take a lot of space up which can be ideal for pet owners that are working with small spaces.
This would be the ideal small investment for anyone that wants to bring a little joy into their pooches day but that does not want to spend a fortune to do it!
Get A Pool
Your pup will appreciate having a fun place to play this summer. Any of the pools listed above are a good bet when it comes to pricing, durability and a size match. These items typically sell out pretty quick this time of year so you do want to act quickly.
One of the best things about a pool for your dog besides the obvious relief from the heat is that they can double as their very own bathtub! They are a great flexible option for any home that has pets.
Do be sure that you do not leave your pet unmonitored while they are enjoying their splash time for the first few times that they use their pool.
You want to be near by in case there are any mishaps so you can react quickly and kept them from developing a fear of water!
